The guitar is one of the most satisfying instruments that you can play. Just about every genre of music we hear today includes some style of guitar playing weather it’s acoustic, country finger picking, blues riffs or heavy metal shredding. You can play whatever music fits your mood on one instrument. Also, the guitar is portable, you can take it just about anywhere, your friends will think you’re awesome, so it’s pretty much a win – win all the way around.
There are a bounty of women who have made successful careers being professional guitar players and even more who play only themselves or their friends and family. But compared to the number of men who have been successful guitarists, the women are a mere handful. Why is this? People have their theories, some legitimate, some completely off the wall and sexists. Like the one that claims girls don’t learn guitar because they don’t have the forearm strength like boys do. Come on, really? Do you think that ever kept a girl from grabbing a guitar and learning to play it better than her brother? I doubt it.
Maybe there are a multitude of reasons, like, girls don’t have as many role models as boys. Girls are encouraged by their parents and teachers to take different musical paths like singing and piano. Parents don’t want their little girls to focus on rock music which is too aggressive. If a girls is encouraged to play guitar, it certainly wouldn’t be an electric guitar. They should stick with classical or folk guitar, song writing. These reasons all come from different articles found on the internet these day.
Thank goodness there are girls and women who have ignored these stereotypes and “rules” and have broken the mold to be incredible guitarists. Girl guitar players are everywhere and they need to be heard.
